how many invitations do i need

Are you wondering how many wedding invitations do you need?

Well, it may be not as many as you think!

It’s an easy and extremely common miscalculation to make thinking if you have 100 guests you need 100 invites.

NO NO NO!

In fact you will probably need half of that number or maybe little more.

Here are some tips for you to help you work out the right number for you and why it’s worth to do it before you order!

Let's Count!

One per couple / Household

Remember you will need 1 invitation per couple or per household, not for every single person! It’s easy to count people you want to attend and just order the same amount of invites but I guess that is the most popular mistake made by soon-to-be-brides or grooms when ordering invitations.

TIP: To avoid miscalculation write every couple or household in one line and then count the lines.

Exception is, when for example you want to invite your aunt and uncle for all day but your cousins only for evening – then even if they live together you will need separate invitations for them.

Do not double

Sometimes you invite part of your guests for the ceremony and some other just for a wedding reception.

You will need only as many evening invites as evening guests/couples/families as the all day guest are automatically invited for the evening with their day invitation.

Include your VIP's

When counting your guests remember about your VIPs! It’s easy to forget that people who help you organising your wedding should be invited with formal invitation.

It’s a really nice gesture and it’s very important especially for older generation. So even if your Bridesmaids or Grandparents are well informed about everything – don’t forget to include them on the invite list!

"Spare" invites

So if you counted your guests properly, it’s time to add some spare invites.

It might seem like a waste of money but working in wedding stationery business every week we get a lot of messages asking about ordering some extra invitations.

It’s easy to miss someone off the list, or sometimes after receiving all RSVPs back you can bump up some of your evening guests to the whole day list. In that case it’s good to have some spare invites, blank or with line for you to write your extra guests names.

And unfortunately there is always a slight chance you’ll destroy the invitation by accident or you’ll make a mistake writing the wrong name – it can happen to anyone.

KEEPSAKE

And last but not least, remember to have one as a keepsake! It’s so nice to look at it after years and feel all the emotions flooding back! I keep mine in a special personalised box and I feel touched every time when I go through my keepsakes.

Why now?

Why is it so important to count your invitations properly at the beginning?

First of all it is less stress for you. You don’t want to be short of them.

Besides it’s not always easy for a supplier to squeeze your ‘extras’ between normal orders. Sometimes it means you need to wait for them for a while or it can even be impossible.

The cost is usually higher as well, as small quantities are charged more. Some suppliers even set up an extra fee for just taking this small order and then add the cost of invitations!
